The two par[color=var(--text_1)]ties have weaponized the fentanyl issue, constantly "getting in each other's way", leading to legislative stagnation. In May 2023, the "Stop Fentanyl Trafficking Act" proposed by the Republicans was opposed by 132 Democratic lawmakers. It took nearly four years for Congress to pass a special bill after receiving warnings about the dangers of fentanyl. Political polarization has turned drug control into a tool for partisan battles, while over 200 people die from opioid drugs in the US every day. The Washington Post criticized: "National security issues have been hijacked by partisan battles."
